Dr Mukesh is a GP in Melbourne and Chair of Council of the World Medical Association. He was the 19th Federal President of the Australian Medical Association and prior to that AMA Victorian State President. He was the chair of the taskforce on Indigenous Health for the AMA, and is also Chair of the beyondblue National Doctors’ Mental Health Program. He has a particular interest in youth health, the care and provision and services for adolescents and young adults with mental health issues, and exploring the provision of social and support services to this sector.
Part of his amazing story involves being attacked in an assault where Dr Haikerwal sustained serious head injuries in the attack and was in a coma for 24 hours and remained in hospital for 2 months. He had to re-learn how to walk and talk, had an amazing recovery and is now back to full health.
In January 2011 Dr Haikerwal was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to medical administration, to the promotion of public health through leadership roles with professional organisations, particularly the Australian Medical Association (AMA), the reform of the Australian health system through the optimisation of information technology, and as a general practitioner.
